why are antipsychotics given to people that are not psychotic
anti psychotics r not given to people that r not psychotic drug company is do know what is in them & pharmacies have all the information to give to u as to what they do peter t is way off yes drug companies make a fortune but every drug is for a specific mental illness i worked in a mental health hospital for thirty years if it was not for the drugs our hospital would be full of institutional patients 90% of the reason people have to return to the hospital is because they have stopped their medication i have seen hundreds of people admitted that r extremely sick & suffering & see them leave with the proper treatment & medication i know the medication has unpleasant side effects, but have seen it help so many suffering souls that CANNOT FUNCTION without them yes there r cases were a person has been given a psychotic drug & not psychotic but has been misdiagnosed the good outweighs the bad & medication does more good then harm if helmut could spend some time in a mental hospital he would know what is going on u must realize for a major organic mental illness, there is no cure. talking with a therapist will not work for a person with a major mental illness, because without medication they distort reallity & u cannot be delusional & expect just talking to help hope this helps
Because they can help alleviate some of the distressing symptoms in other mental illnesses eg. depression. I am taking quetiapine and it reduces some terrifying thoughts that I have even though I am not psychotic.
Hope this helps.
Because they effect certain neural systems in ways that are beneficial for other uses. I know that a few are used by Bipolar people for sleep, and I think a couple may have mood stabilizing properties as well. A lot of psychotropics are used for more than just the most common illness they are designed to treat. Antipsychotics are a class of drug and their use is not always related to psychosis.
In short, lazy psychiatrists, psychologists, & prevaricating mental health workers.

B/c the psychopharmacology industry is huge $$$$. They do not know how these medicines work, but it beats giving the time and effort to give people proper therapy so they give antipsychotics.
