holy god. that is the first i have heard of that crap.
Children doesn'tmean the same as toddlers, but I am really against it. The spike in drug administration I blame a lot on teachers. While they may be excellent at teaching, when a child acts up, they tend to call the parents & say the child is hyperactive so the parents get the kids on meds. Teachers r not doctors & should not diagnose. We need parents to raise their kids to respect authority & not worry about whether the kid id reading by the time they start school. That way the teacher will be able to do their job of teaching & not babysitting a bunch of kids going wild in the classroom. Done ranting.
I would NEVER recommend a psychotropic to a parent of a toddler. I hesitate to even diagnose a toddler with any mental disorder. I have lots of parents that come into my office & want their 3 year olds tested for ADHD because they r hyperactive, distracted, & defiant. That is not ADHD. That is 3! The DSM-IV actually says to avoid diagnosing young children because it is difficult to ascertain what behavior is due to a mental illness & what is developmentally appropriate. I can not imagine what a kid could be doing to be on an antipsychotic. These r probably parents with kids with behavioral problems, looking for the quick fix, rather than going through therapy & putting in some work.
I used to be a teacher in a toddler preschool classroom. I had one student that showed all the signs of anxiety & depression & that was really wierd to me because I did not know that a two year old could get depressed. He huddled in the rocking chair all day for his first three weeks straight & started to cry if anyone approached, talked to or looked at him. All he needed was a sense of familiarity & security, not prozac.
Generally a psychologist wo not diagnose a child as needing psych drugs until they're at least 5 or 6. And even then the decision should be made with the utmost caution, & only after all the other options have been exhausted.
im against it!!!!!!!! we are such a drugged out nation, cant even watch tv without drugs for this or that being advertised
i doubt that they are administering psychotropics to very many toddlers. In medical jargon, when they talk about children and adults, they tend to use either age 18 or 21 as the break point.
I do not have a problem with teenagers getting medical help, and if that is a psychotropic drug, it is OK with me. But i do think that teenagers AND adults should be evaluated carefully to see if drugs are really the right way to go.
It is rediculous! People are sublimenting their bad parenting skills with drugs, and that is not right. People need to learn how do properly disapline their children and set clear boundaries. Without boundaries, how is the child supposed to know how to act? Of course they are acting crazy if the parents are not disaplining their bad behaviors. What is this world comming to!
i think it is horrible. if i was a parent i would never let my child take phychiatric meds unless there was a SERIOUS problem they needed it for.
