Is it really worth it to take medication for mental health disorders, or should you at least try to deal with it without it. it seems to me that they are constantly trying to suppress the symptoms without treating the problem. According to them l should be on antidepressants (SSRIs), antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers, as well as sleeping pills,,,and yet l function well in day-to-day life.
l do not have bipolar disorder.

it is always healthier to deal with it, with your own mind and not using medication. once people take medication for mental disorders it can make them dependent on them even though they are said to not be addictive.

We r always better off IF we can avoid medication, but sometimes medication helps us in ways that talk therapy can not.

Perhaps u do not function as well as u could with medication? Perhaps ur outlook on life is distorted by a mental illness? We do not always know what is best for us.

I think u should break this down & think very, very carefully & as objectively as possible about why these medications have been prescribed. Do u meet the diagnostic criteria for depression? Have u had a psychotic episode? Do u have mood swings? Do u sleep for for at least 6 or 7 hours a night?

Some of these r tough for us to answer ourselves, especially the psychosis.

I think u should take ur doctors advice or at the very least find a doctor or therapist u can trust & see him or her regularly. But then u might have some trust issues too.

I hope things work out. Good luck.

Jez.you stated: ''it seems to me that they r constantly trying to suppress the symptoms without treating the problem.''

You my dear r SOOOOO CORRECT! They claim they do not know ''what causes'' the imbalance, but THINK its a misfire of commincation with the chemicals in the brain.

Something-ALWAYS causes it.viruses, environment...severe trauma (and even the mildest of concussions) can cause the issue..

But to simply state that it is just a chemical imbalance..wrong.

Oh, they r not cure alls..by far...its a quick fix & a line, hook & sinker.

I really honestly do not know anyone that it has helped.

I know what you mean! They perscribed me to risperdal, an antipsycotic, and lexapro, a SSRI. I forget the sleeping one, but its only one mg because its so strong. I like myself better when I do not take them because I know that I made myself healthy. And with the new atypical antipsycotics, there is a risk of irreversable side effects and everything. I just like to live without them.

it all depends on what ur problem is. i was put on anti-depressants for social anxiety disorder & depression, they really did help, but i got to a point where i did not need them anymore.

it sounds like u may have Bipolar disorder, whit this u do need to take ur medications, u will seem fine to yourself, but other around u may feel uncomfortable because they do not know when u may go off on them.

my suggestion would be to try the medications, see how they work for you, & if u do not like it u can always get ur dosage lowered & eventually wean yourself off of them.

It is necessary when you can not function to control your disorder so that you can. Most people who have disorders believe that they function well when they actually don't. You need to ask the people around you to get an accurate opinion. Also remember that you do not want to just be able to function, you want more than that.

If you function well, and are happy, you probably do not need it.
